'The Color Purple' by Alice Walker is a book that has stayed with me. I first read it senior year in high school and then saw the broadway production of the story. Seeing the musical was fun, but every time I revisit the book I pick up on a different theme or think about a character in a different light. It led me to think about ideas like family, relationships, womanhood, and religion. It's a great book because even if a reader doesn't identify with any of the characters it's beautifully written and inspiring.
On my first day of college, I was sitting in the student lounge chatting w/ a group of new freshmen. The subject of "favorite book" came up. The first 3 people all said Catcher in the Rye was their favorite. I wasn't a reader at the time, and had to confess that I'd never read it. One kid was particularly shocked. He ran to his dorm, grabbed the book, and shoved it into my hands. I started reading it and could not stop. I was up most of the night with my nose in that book. A few years later, the book itself doesn't hold much truth for me, but I still remember it fondly for making me take books seriously and for launching my interest in fiction.
Ever since reading this book, I've worked to model myself after President Roosevelt...sort of. Anyway, it's a great read and I recommend it!
Nevermind that it was actually written by Ted Sorensen, if you're a civics nerd like me, this is one of the most inspiring books of all time.
